The AVA7 utilizes two fans to cool the amplifier channels, ensuring long-term reliability. To reduce fan noise to an absolute minimum, a thermal-sensing and control circuit, which senses increases in temperature within the amplifier and powers the fans at a speed proportional to that temperature increase, has been incorporated in the JBL Performance Series AVA7. As a result, the fan is never turning faster than necessary, and most of the noise that is generated is masked by the program being listened to.
It also employs sophisticated protection circuitry (one for each channel) that senses many possible fault conditions, such as shorted loudspeaker wires or excess power demand, and turns the affected channel(s) off until the fault condition is removed, at which time normal operation is automatically restored. While protection of this sort is not uncommon in today’s well-designed amplifiers, a remarkable feature of the JBL Performance AVA7’s protection circuits is that they are optically coupled to the signal circuit; there is no direct electrical connection between the signal path and the protection circuitry. As a result, there can be no coloration of the music, no interaction between protection and amplification, until certain thresholds are exceeded, at which point the channel(s) would turn off completely.

We sold this pair of REF-210's mono blocks originally to our customer who traded them in on the new Audio Research REF-250 mono blocks. They have silver faceplates and are one owner from a non smoking household and include the original packing. They have a total of about 4000 hours of use and are on their second set of new 6550 tubes (original set of tubes included if desired). We have tested the amplifiers and they work and sound fine.

Functions include the choice of six levels of illumination, plus off; bias measurements for each output tube; A.C. line voltage; logarithmic, scalable power output,and total hours of tube use. There is a small Papst fan mounted on the rear panel to circulate air over the audio stages.

The 12V D.C. fan runs continuously at a fixed low speed whenever the amplifier is powered-up. Input is balanced only, while the output has separate taps for 4-8-16 ohm speaker loads. As expected, there is a 20A IEC connector for power and the REF210 has a 12V trigger to allow remote turn-on.
Power output is 210 watts continuous based upon a push-pull, fully balanced vacuum-tube circuit running in partial cathode coupling mode, utilizing three matched pairs of 6550C output tubes. The REF210 uses two 6550C driver tubes, each controlling three output tubes operating in unison. The input stage uses direct-coupled JFETs, followed by a 6N1P vacuum-tube amplifying stage. New proprietary coupling caps and extensive film-cap bypassing of all electrolytics are used in the power supply. There is tube regulation of the input stage, with six additional solid-state regulators. Power supply rectification is solid-state with a total of seven regulators. TAD Evolution One
The heart of the TAD Evolution One is the Coherent Source Transducer Driver developed from that used in the TAD Reference One - a driver that embodies the single point source concept. The midrange and tweeter are configured coaxially so their directional characteristics conform. The resultant directional response remains uniform across a wide frequency, ensuring extremely stable sound localization and a natural soundfield. The tweeter diaphragm is made of beryllium, the lightest and stiffest metal available for speaker diaphragms. Formed by TAD’s unique deposition technique, it exhibits high internal loss and smooth frequency response. Achieving an ideal diaphragm shape based on computer analysis, it is capable of reproducing frequencies up to 100kHz. The midrange features an extremely lightweight magnesium diaphragm with high internal loss. Both of these units reproduce sound with virtually no distortion and none of the coloration characteristics of other materials. As a woofer requires a high degree of both stability and strength, TAD developed the Multi-layered Aramid Composite Shell diaphragm, made by laminating many layers of Aramid fabric and non-woven fabric for light weight and high stiffness. This shell-shaped diaphragm with integrated center cap and cone is driven by a large diameter voice coil and neodymium magnet, reproducing rich, clear bass with low coloration. The aero-design chassis is designed to minimise any airflow noise and improve the resolution of bass sounds. The Structurally Inert Laminated Enclosure Technology features a framework of high rigidity birch plywood combined with MDF for high internal loss, achieving an enclosure that combines high strength with low resonance. The enclosures teardrop shaped rear section further ereduces unwanted cabinet resonance as a result of the improved stiffness of the curved panels. Two finishes: high gloss black, or wood veneer with a closed-pore satin finish, enhance the beauty of the curved cabinet design. TAD put a great deal of effort into the design of the networks, to seamlessly intergrate the drive units into a cohesive whole. To eliminate any effects from magnetism and vibration due to the CST and bass drivers, the network filters are located outside of the cabinet.
